Development And Validation of A Lecturer Teaching Effectiveness Scale for Nigerian Universities' Lecturers

Abstract

This study developed and determined the reliability and consistency of the 30-item Lecturers' Teaching Effectiveness Scale (LTES). This is with a view to establish a reliable framework that not only supports fair and merit-based assessments but also promotes a culture of excellence in teaching and learning across Nigerian universities. The target population for this research comprised all in-service university lecturers in Nigeria. A representative sample of 2,400 lecturers were drawn from six states representing Nigeria's six geopolitical zones. The instrument for data collection was the LTES, a 30-item scale developed based on a comprehensive review of literature and designed to measure various aspects of teaching effectiveness. Exploratory Factor Analysis statistics was used to analyse the data. After the removal of 6-items due to low reliability loading from sub-scales, the remaining 24-item LTES demonstrated high reliability, with a Cronbach's Alpha of 0.89 and a Split-half coefficient of 0.75, surpassing the reliability of the initial 30-item version. Consistent item-total statistics further affirmed the robustness of the 24-item LTES. These findings underscore the importance of continuous professional development and support for lecturers to enhance teaching effectiveness. It was recommended that continuous professional development and reflective practice are essential for maintaining high levels of teaching effectiveness throughout a lecturer's career.
